Penny Puppy's 1st Birthday at the Beach

birthday dog session at the beach in Santa Barbara, California, first birthday dog ideas

If you haven’t been following along too closely on Instagram, in August of 2020 we adopted a puppy who we named Penny.

We were still mourning the loss of our dear, health-issue-ridden dog Brady who passed in May, but we were casually keeping an eye out for puppies because Brady’s smaller but older sister Indy was 11 years old and we wanted her to have a buddy to keep her company as she ages. We’re a two dog family, which I believe is especially helpful when you have a senior, so the younger can inspire the older to keep active. We knew we wanted to rescue, being us, but that this time we wanted to get a puppy. And as this was the year of pandemic, it seemed like a good time because of all the time we could spend with a new pup at home.

Enter Penny the punk, who we adopted from the amazing Shadow’s Fund. Full of innocence and fun, weighed down only by the largeness of her ears and the roundness of her puppy belly. Follow along with her and her sister’s antics on Instagram at @indyandpenny if you like!

So since we actually knew her birthday (a novelty for dog rescuers), we celebrated her first birthday this April, with a day at the beach where she could do her favorite thing - watch the birds!

Are you interested in a similar session with your pup? Send me a message! We can go wherever the wind takes them, and capture the experience, the joy of their youth or the wisdom of their age! These are my very favorite types of shoots.

If you’re interested in adopting a dog in need or supporting a beautiful rescue that is everything a dog rescue should be, I highly recommend checking out Shadow’s Fund based in Lompoc, California. Visit https://shadowsfund.org/ to learn more.
